Stressed out? What are you doing about it?

It doesn’t seem to matter who you are, where you live, what stage of life you are in, stress has a way of creeping in and making life difficult doesn’t it? Whether it is work stress, family stress or otherwise, it all can make its mark! It can impact our day to day, our eating, our sleeping, our work, how we communicate, and so much more! Sometimes the stress is short-lived, like an important deadline coming up with a work project. Sometimes the stress is just the nature of the type of work we do. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves is look to have coping mechanisms in place.

Coping mechanisms for combatting stress are essential for your health, for your work productivity, for your family and mental well-being! Google “Coping mechanisms for stress” and you will find all kinds of ideas from breathing techniques to changing jobs to eating habits and everything in between. The most important thing is that you have strategies for coping and outlets for venting or combatting the impact of stress – and that you actively utilize them.

Over the years that I have been in HR, I have counselled many employees that are going through a lot of work stress.  I have worked with many managers to create more effective ways to manage and reduce employee stress.  Many of the clients we deal with have heath plans in place for their employees and within those plans usually are options for additional assistance i.e. Massage therapy, specialists etc. Family doctors are also there for help. The key is for employees and employers to recognize stress and to actively work to alleviate it.

Some stress is good stress, prolonged stress can have unintended consequences. So what is it you do to help combat stress?

Here is a link to an article that provides some tips on dealing with work stress: Beyond Blue

Companies with a solid strategy to recognize members of their team enjoy stronger engagement, increased employee morale, a devoted spirit of customer service, and lower turnover rates. If you treat your employees as if they were your best customers, they will become loyal brand advocates who are more engaged with your customers and your business as a whole. There is something interesting that happens when you give praise to your employees and in doing so; it doesn’t have to come with breaking the bank. Beginners Guide On Peer-To-Peer Recognition Programs

A happy workforce is a productive workforce, as most managers and HR professionals know. In recent years, several startup companies have grabbed attention by using some unusual methods to create a happier workforce. They’ve experimented with unorthodox ideas such as unlimited vacation time. These companies have also established more flexible workspaces and gone overboard with perks such as in-office climbing walls and coffee shops. Although there’s something to be said for these ideas, the reality is that not all companies have the resources to implement them into their workplaces. However, even if your company doesn’t have the ability to adopt one of these radical ideas, you still have all the raw materials at your disposal to create a happier and more productive workforce. Peer-to-peer recognition programs can be the tool you need to unlock the potential that already exists within your workplace for more engaged and happier employees.

The factor that makes peer-to-peer recognition so powerful and effective is the fact that recognition simply means more to people when it comes from someone in the same position. When an employee feels appreciated by co-workers who have the same experiences, that appreciation carries more weight and is more likely to be a positive influence on that person’s work going forward. They also have a higher degree of effectiveness than other types of recognition or incentive programs because people who are lauded by their peers are more likely to pay it forward and reciprocate when they see another peer go above and beyond the call of duty.

Creating and implementing a peer-to-peer recognition program can be a powerful way to tap into the potential already contained within your most important resource. As long as such a program’s procedures are clearly defined, the rewards fully understood and everything properly communicated, a peer-to-peer recognition program can drive greater employee engagement and reduce turnover significantly. The following guide explains how peer-to-peer recognition can work toward higher employee engagement and details how it can be implemented. Follow it, and your office environment can be a lot more connected and productive.

10 Ways To Destress Your Employees

Stress in the workplace is something that should concern every employer. Not only can stressed employees become disgruntled and less interested in their work, but it also can have serious health impacts on those employees. Employees who are stressed at work may look for more reasons to take time off from their jobs. The result of all those “mental health days” is lost productivity and the prospect that employers may have to replace some of their most experienced and tenured staff. Although stress is an inevitable fact of life in any job, it’s in an employer’s best interests to take steps to mitigate stress and help their employees cope with it more effectively.

Fortunately, there are a number of strategies employers can utilize to reduce stress levels in the workplace, and many of them are relatively easy and inexpensive to implement. For example, allowing and encouraging employees to take brief breaks to step away from their desks or workstations to take a walk and clear their minds can give them an opportunity to refocus and recharge. Even a few minutes away from the crush of their tasks and responsibilities can help employees attack their jobs with renewed vigor. It’s also helpful to create a culture within the office that encourages employees to share their concerns with management. Keeping an open line of communication between management and employees can go a long way toward helping to ease stress levels in the workplace. Healthy bodies also cope with stress more effectively, so providing nutritious snacks and/or instituting a fitness break for employees to practice stretching or other light exercise can make a significant difference in alleviating stress.

If you’re looking for other ways to help your employees deal with workplace stress more effectively, consider the following infographic. It contains these and many other tips to help lessen stress levels in the workplace and teach employees some coping strategies that have proven to be successful. Your employees’ stress isn’t just their problem — it’s yours, too.

How Engaged are YOUR Employees?

In a 2015 study of 3,300 businesses and HR leaders from 106 countries completed by Deloitte, engagement and culture was classified as the number one challenge facing global companies.

How is your employee engagement and culture? Have you measured it? How do you know where it lies? Deloitte also found that 29% of workers in North America report to be disengaged. As well, only 7% of respondents rated themselves as “excellent” at measuring, driving and improving engagement and retention.

If your company is struggling in this area as many are, here are some tips and tricks to help boost your efforts toward improving employee engagement:

  1. If you utilize annual or semi annual performance reviews – they tend to be backward thinking – that is that they measure past performance. Look to add elements like goal setting, linking your company mission and vision and goals into the review.

  1. Meet with your employees more often. I like to call these “check-ins”. These can be formal or informal – but they are scheduled chats to sit regularly – maybe once per month to talk about employee performance, any issues, or general discussion topics. This gives the employee a more regular “touch base” session with their manager, increases satisfaction and understanding of job duties and goals.

  1. Make employee engagement a corporate priority. Measure and evaluate it regularly. Report on it.

  1. Ensure your leaders are engaging in coaching and providing effective feedback to their people. Ensure they work to show their employees how meaningful their contributions are.

  1. Ensure to look at where the gaps are within your employee engagement – ensure to work some of these “must haves” into your interview questions and hiring strategy.

  1. Invest in learning and development programs for your employees.

  1. Listen. Listen to your employees – probably one of the most important point. Then respond, the next important. Their needs and what they value will give you a good indicator of how to improve your engagement and build additional layers of satisfaction.

Engagement stems from the top. If this is an issue in your company, ensure to recognize it, talk about it, plan, put plans in motion and prioritize. You will see the results of your efforts in your people, their output, the retention and your business success.
